The useful 2026 HDD locating question is not which receiver has the longest feature list. It is which complete guidance system fits the contractor’s bore conditions, communicates with the drill, and produces a usable record.
For buyers comparing UCG Underground’s Ditch Witch Subsite collection, identify the equipment generation and package contents first. Original TK, TK Recon and Marksman systems differ, and a used receiver is not a complete guidance package.
What the 2026 Market Evidence Shows
NTIA’s BEAD dashboard dated May 4, 2026 recorded 54 of 56 Final Proposals approved by NTIA, 52 by NIST, and 50 award agreements signed. Those are program milestones, not locator sales or HDD equipment revenue.
The broader push toward smart infrastructure modernization connects trenchless construction with planning and digital records. For buyers, that means linking guidance observations to project information.
System Architecture Buyers Must Specify
An HDD guidance system has two links: the beacon sends data to the tracker, and the tracker relays it to the drill display. Specify the tracker, beacon, display, power and software, plus any retained components. “Subsite system” is not a compatibility description.
Marksman uses a tracker, a Commander 7 or TD Recon display, and a Marksman-series beacon. The TK Recon tracker weighs 9 pounds with 10–16 hours of battery life. Marksman+ lists 7 pounds and up to 16 hours.
A tracker follows the drill-head beacon. It does not identify every gas, electrical, water or telecommunications line. OSHA’s HDD safety bulletin describes a 2013 Kansas City incident where exposed electrical lines were mistaken for a gas line, and drilling then struck a deeper gas line.
How Subsite Locating Systems Differ
| ConfigurationPublished frequencies | |
| TK Recon 1 | 29 kHz |
| TK Recon 2 | 12 or 29 kHz |
| TK Recon 4 | 1.5, 12, 20 or 29 kHz |
| Marksman with M17+ | Six, 12–38 kHz |
| Marksman+ with M17 | Six, 12–38 kHz |
| Marksman+ with M17+ | 32, 1.9–46 kHz |
This compares specifications, not field reliability. The original TK lists 500 feet of telemetry range versus 2,000 feet for TKd and TKq. DCI’s FT5p lists a 100-foot depth range and a 125-foot data range, so never swap them. Matching frequencies does not establish cross-brand compatibility.
Interference Mitigation and Its Limits
Subsite separates active interference, which adds electromagnetic energy, from passive interference, which distorts the beacon field around metal. The Bore Path Analyzer is a Marksman+ function and does not check passive interference.
Picture a route moving from an open verge onto reinforced pavement. A clear signal at entry says little about the whole crossing. A demonstration should show which alternative frequency exists on the supplied beacon.
Depth Range, Accuracy and Pitch Resolution
Marksman sheets state depth accuracy of ±5% over the testable range. As a scale illustration only, 5% of 20 feet is 1 foot, not a permissible clearance.
Revisions matter. Marksman Issue 1.4 states Marksman+ depth up to 125 feet, while later literature lists 130 feet for high-power beacons. Original TK beacons list 1% pitch resolution (TX, TXh, TXq) and 0.1% (TXqg). That is inclination, not depth accuracy.
Beacon Choice: Runtime, Heat and Fit
| BeaconFrequencyRated depthBattery lifeMax temp | ||||
| M10 | 29 kHz | 55 ft | 16 hours | 180°F |
| M15 | 12–38 kHz | 70 ft | 80 hours | 221°F |
| M15+ | 1.9–46 kHz | 95 / 130 ft | 60 / 30 hours | 221°F |
M15 and M15+ measure 15 inches long, versus 17.8 inches for M17 and M17+, so confirm tool fit. Budget runtime around the power setting you need. The Marksman manual names high temperature as the primary cause of beacon failure. Include the correct batteries and chargers.
Digital Planning and As-Built Records
Field Scout records entry and exit points and utility crossings on Apple or Android devices, then transfers plans to Commander 7 with ScoutView. Exports include PDF, KML, plan CSV and as-built CSV. A digital file preserves what was recorded. It does not verify buried utilities.
Commander 7 has a 7-inch display and supports 12- and 24-VDC rig power. The September 2026 update register lists Commander 7 at 7.0/7.0, Marksman and Marksman+ at 2.3, and TK Recon at 19/22. For mixed fleets, record installed versions and price updates into the quotation.
When a Walkover Purchase Isn’t Enough
A Drill-To function or long telemetry rating is not permission to proceed through an unverified corridor. Brownline reports using its Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool for a 6,267-foot crossing in Kemah, Texas in December 2024, citing magnetic interference. That is a supplier-reported account. For difficult crossings, define access limits and verification methods first.
Price Snapshot With Clear Package Boundaries
UCG used asking prices, checked September 28, 2026:
- TK Recon 4 receiver (Z841): $9,500
- TK Recon 4 package (Z840): $15,500
- TKQ package (Z832): $11,000
- 752 tracker set (Z827): $5,500
Condition, accessories and warranties may differ. DCI lists transmitters: SuperCore DTS15p at $6,200, Classic-Core DT15p at $5,200 and Falcon F5+ FT5p at $4,700. These are components, not systems. Subsite directs new buyers to quotations, so request itemized offers.
New vs. Used: Ownership Costs
When evaluating the Subsite TK series in HDD procurement, ask which role the equipment will serve in your fleet. Subsite maintains legacy resources for TK Series and TSR Mobile, but parts are not guaranteed. Compare:
- Acquisition and missing components
- Batteries and chargers
- Operator training
- Service, updates and repairs
- Downtime
- Estimated resale value
A Documented Acceptance Test
Record model identifiers, serial numbers, software versions and contents against the quotation. Subsite’s calibration guide places the tracker 10 feet from the housed beacon and 20 feet from the drill, metal and utilities. It confirms readings at 5 and 10 feet for each frequency and measures noise floor every 50 feet.
Cover identity, compatibility, measurement, communication, records and exceptions. OSHA still requires route inspection, multiple utility-verification methods, potholing and stopping when readings change.
Conclusion: 2026 Procurement Trends
The trend is toward flexible signal options and tighter integration of guidance, planning and as-built records. Catalogs support that, but they don’t establish a replacement schedule or growth forecast.
Define the work, choose a complete supported configuration, compare equivalent scopes and costs, then demand evidence.
