As Halloween approaches, homeowners will be getting their properties ready with spooky decorations, but one popular decoration could cause problems if it’s put on the roof, warns roofing expert Mike Storey of UKFR Roofing & Insulation.
Fake cobwebs are a Halloween favourite, but Mike says homeowners should think twice before draping them across roof tiles, gutters or roof edges.
“Fake cobwebs might seem completely harmless, but putting them across your roof isn’t something I’d recommend,” explains Mike.
“They can catch on tiles, gutters, and other parts of the roof, and anything that interferes with your gutters can potentially cause problems with water draining away properly.
“The bigger concern is when homeowners start attaching decorations directly to their roof. Screws, nails, clips or other fixings can damage roofing materials and create points where water can get in.”
Mike says homeowners don’t need to miss out on the Halloween fun but should think carefully about where they put their decorations.
“If you’re decorating for Halloween, keep the roof out of it. There are plenty of safer places for decorations, such as around your front door, windows, walls or in the garden.
“You don’t want a bit of seasonal decoration to leave you with a roofing problem once Halloween is over.”
