Architecture Awards 2023 BUILD 85 Apr23343 orn in 1973, Giancarlo Zema graduated with a degree in architecture from the La Sapienza University of Rome, where he was taught by Professor Giovanni Zuccon, one of the most important naval architects on the international scene. Throughout his career, Giancarlo has collaborated with renowned architects across the globe. In 2001, he founded the GZDG, an architecture practice in Rome. The firm has become known for its emotional, highly futuristic, and attractive style of design, which frequently incorporates soft lines that recall biomorphic forms. A pioneer in the various design sectors, the GZDG researches, develops, and combines the best technologies available on the global market, enriching projects with highly innovative systems and contents. It competing with extraordinary hotel and resort projects on the water in Qatar and United Arab Emirates, pedestrian bridges in Bahrain, sports facilities in Libya and Azerbaijan, restaurant chains in Iran and vertiports in China. Over the years, the GZDG has been involved in the design of a number of different projects, which have been recognised and praised by a multitude of respected sources. The New York Times, The Sunday Times and Forbes have written about him. His projects are the subject of international exhibitions and exhibited by cultural institutions including La Triennale Milan Design Museum, The Venice Biennale, Ara Pacis Museum, Farnesina Design, that recognize his bold creativity and profound innovative strength. Having amassed a truly impressive presence in the press since its establishment, the GDZG has continued to design a huge variety of eco-friendly projects in recent years. In 2020, the firm worked with ANAS, the public Italian highway company, to design its “Green Island” smart charging stations for electric cars, which are now distributed throughout the country. They feature highdesign rest areas, PV charging stations, and solar-powered lighting. Later, in 2021, the GZDG worked with ANAS again to design its Smart Road Centre in Rome, the first campus in Europe dedicated to the development and promotion of ANAS Smart Road and Green Island technologies. It serves as a space for education and exhibition, where visitors can learn about high design elements from the most advanced Smart City technologies, from Smart Poles to Smart urban furnishings with photovoltaic technology. Most recently, for the Levi-Montalcini Foundation, the GZDG has designed a nature-inspired exhibition and research centre. It serves as an innovative and eco-sustainable hub dedicated to the work of Nobel prize winner Rita Levi-Montalcini, an Italian neurobiologist whose research led to the discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF). Its architecture pays tribute to her pioneering work, inspired by the parallelism between the human nervous system and the root system of plants. As a result of the pioneering designs it has created, the Giancarlo Zema Design Group has been awarded Most Innovative Green Architecture Firm, Italy, in the BUILD Architecture Awards 2023.
