Air Technology Manufacturer of the Year 2023 - Canada In 1963, Mel Cooper, the founder of M.K. Plastics, was completing mechanical contracting and higher-end ventilation systems when he was approached by McGill University in Montreal to fabricate PVC ductwork. Over 45 years ago, little was known about PVC in Canada and the United States. Mel persisted and created the ducting, quickly becoming an expert in thermoplastics. When customers required a corrosive-resistant fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) fan and ducting, the company was able to meet their requirements. M.K. Plastics went on to become the first manufacturer in North America to fabricate FRP fans. Fibre Reinforced Plastic fans are typically used to capture, move, clean, and vent corrosive fumes. FumeScrubber systems utilise FRP fans due to a high humidity, wet corrosive environment. Galvanising and etching processes also use FRP fans for the exhaust. Waste water treatment plants, laboratory exhausts, and chemical-laden industrial processes operate in very demanding conditions and rely on special materials, like fibreglass, to withstand these corrosive conditions. Continuing its revolutionary work, M.K. Plastics was also the first to construct a fiberglass centrifugal fan and achieve AMCA certification for the fan’s sound and air performance. The company transformed the industry by creating a patented pressure control system for laboratory exhaust applications. Unlike thermoplastics, FRP has a highly crosslinked molecular structure. The material has a flexural, high impact strength, and temperature performance twice that of most thermoplastics. FRP materials are low-maintenance and exceptionally durable. As it is impervious to moisture, fungus, and bacterial growth, the result is a much longer service life.
