Whether it is completing a multi-unit housing project or helping tenants improve their interiors, the studio keeps its mind sharp and its work outstanding. We caught up with Jeff following his studio’s recognition here in our Architecture Awards 2026. As Jeff himself explained: “Be it a townhouse or a private residence, the people living there both deserve a standard of care in what they’re buying; functional and beautiful spaces that support wellbeing and bring joy.” Its detail-driven nature and client-focused approach support this work, and a healthy level of doubt ensures the team never get complacent, even if they are doing something they have previously done countless times before. This is particularly useful in projects like multiunit housing, where the rigorous demands of a brief can squeeze the design thinking out of the conversation. Jeff added: “Keeping the resident in mind acts as a counter point to ensure that we don’t resolve to a bottom line of simply checking rule boxes to get by.” Jeff Clarke Architect’s balance of creativity and proven solutions was on full display recently across a 42unit townhouse project it carried out in the South Cambie area of Vancouver.The site is a full city block, with steep sloping grade and townhomes arranged in a courtyard configuration. Repetition is necessary across these projects given the nature of the site, but too much repetition can feel oppressive. This is where the studio’s balanced approach came in, something reflected in the end result. “Each group of buildings had its own personality but read as one family. The client was happy and said it felt like a European village.” Other projects, like ‘York’, allow the studio to be more creative, with this example seeing the character of traditional English row housing combined with contemporary detailing. It is the level of detailing that Jeff was particularly proud of here, reflecting his belief that good design is less about adding and more about preventing the unwanted realities of construction from compromising a beautifully drawn design. These realities will not just magically go away, but they can be designed around through intent and collaboration. Detailing the importance of collaboration, Jeff told us of a conversation he recently had with a pioneering developer, who told him that, when choosing an architect, he looks for two things: alignment in design vision and egoless collaboration. This is why Jeff views the design process as very diplomatic, believing that the purest form of creativity exists in the small window of space between conviction and letting go. Guided by this ethos, Jeff commented: “The work will speak for itself, and people will hopefully see a high standard of care in what we do.” His clients certainly do, and whether he is helping homeowners to feel informed, confident, and protected as they navigate a complex and emotional process across private residences, or supporting boutique developers as they confidently control project delivery without sacrificing quality, budget, or timelines across multi-unit housing, Jeff stands out as a trusted and wholly capable figure. It is on the back of this that Jeff Clarke Architect Inc. has a number of demanding projects in the works for the rest of 2026 and beyond, including a residential rezoning set to take place in North Vancouver. Interestingly, it is, in many ways, an impossible project, thanks to the provincial government and the district disagreeing. Thus, the role of the studio will be to present a sensible argument for this much-needed housing, using the power of architecture to solve conflict and address several conflicting points of view.
