Sustainable Building Awards 2025

Sustainable Building Awards 2025 Modular homes are rapidly gaining popularity in Australia due to their affordability, quick construction times, sustainability, and design flexibility. With changing policies and shifts in market demands, these homes are poised to play a pivotal role in the future of the country’s residential construction sector. Leading the charge in this shift is RubiksCraft, a company dedicated to creating high-quality, forward-thinking modular homes that cater to the diverse needs of modern living. We spoke with Managing Director Martin Zhang for more information, as RubiksCraft is named in the Sustainable Building Awards 2025. Based in Melbourne, RubiksCraft is an innovative modular construction company that specialises in designing and delivering high-quality, energy-efficient modular homes and small-scale commercial buildings. Founded by a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and project delivery, RubiksCraft was established with a clear mission: to redefine how buildings are designed, produced, and delivered in Australia. At its core, RubiksCraft represents a fatherand-son legacy in property development; father David Zhang is a second-generation real estate professional in China, bringing decades of experience in residential and boutique project development. His son, Martin, represents the first generation of the family to enter the Australian property sector. “RubiksCraft is built on this spirit of continuity,” Martin shared, “combining inherited wisdom, discipline, and industry insight with a new generation’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and modular construction. This blend of tradition and forward-thinking is a core part of who we are, and it continues to shape the way we design, build, and serve our clients.” Though RubiksCraft is a young company – formed in 2024 – its growth has been strongly supported by Rubiks Development, a Melbourne-based property development group boasting extensive experience in townhouse, detached home, and boutique residential projects. Over the past eight years, Rubiks Development has successfully delivered 33 projects and served 48 investors, building a strong reputation and a mature project management ecosystem. Leveraging this foundation, RubiksCraft has rapidly built a distinctive competitive edge in Australia’s modular housing sector. Its clients range from individual homeowners and young families to rural property owners, developers, and small businesses seeking faster, more reliable, and modern building solutions. What’s more, the company also collaborates with architects and local councils on replacement dwellings, rebuild projects, and regional developments. Effective from January 2025, Victoria’s new planning policies allow dwellings under 60 square metres to be built without requiring planning approval, provided they meet certain standards. These changes aim to increase housing supply and make it easier for builders and homeowners to obtain permits. This policy shift has created a significant market opportunity for RubiksCraft’s premium modular solutions – including high-end granny flats, home offices, wine rooms, and custom lifestyle modules – which stand out for their design innovation, rapid delivery, cost efficiency, and high functional flexibility. RubiksCraft also plays a significant role in the sustainable construction space, combining offsite manufacturing with fully galvanised steel framing and a factory-controlled process that cuts material waste by up to 40%, ensuring that every module meets or exceeds 7-Star energy requirements. Martin explained: “With more than 70% of each home completed in a controlled factory environment, our system reduces material waste, eliminates weather delays, and cuts total construction time by up to 50% compared with traditional builds.” Looking to the future, RubiksCraft intends to continue enhancing its capabilities in alignment with the evolving environment. The company will be expanding its modular product range, including a new series launching in late 2025 with improved energy performance and more flexible layouts. It notes that demand in regional and coastal areas continues to rise, and plans to strengthen its footprint in those markets, particularly for highyield investment modular homes. Alongside this, the RubiksCraft team is also scaling its prefabrication capacity to support faster, higher-volume delivery, backed by the strong project ecosystem of Rubiks Development. Partnerships with architects and developers will play a larger role in its operations, with plans to integrate modular construction into townhouse projects, rebuilds, and community housing. “The next 18 months will be a significant growth period for RubiksCraft,” Martin announced. “By mid-2026, we expect to have expanded manufacturing, delivered a broader product portfolio, and solidified our position as a leading provider of sustainable, steel-framed modular homes in Australia.” Contact: Martin Zhang Company: RubiksCraft Australia Web Address: www.rubikscraft.com.au Most Innovative Modular Homes Design Firm 2025 – Australia
