BUILD Q4 2025 Glass Doctor® Helps Homeowners Save on Heating Costs This Winter Leading Glass Repair Company Offers Tips to Stop Window Drafts, Reduce Bills, and Protect Homes As the cold weather season approaches, Glass Doctor®, a Neighborly® company and a leader in glass repair and replacement, is urging homeowners to winter-proof their windows before temperatures drop. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, up to 30% of a home's heating energy is lost through its windows. Taking proactive steps now can improve comfort and help reduce heating costs all season long. The professionals at Glass Doctor specialize in identifying common window issues, such as broken seals, cracks, or inefficient panes that may contribute to heat loss. Through expert glass repair or replacement services, Glass Doctor helps homeowners reduce drafts, improve energy efficiency, cut energy costs, and keep homes safe and comfortable throughout the winter. "Many homeowners don't realize that windows are one of the most common sources of heat loss," said Thomas Patterson, Director of New Product Development and Technical Training at Glass Doctor, a Neighborly company. "Addressing these overlooked areas early in the season can prevent energy waste and noticeably improve comfort and safety indoors." Glass Doctor's Top Tips for Winter-Proofing Windows: • Upgrade to Insulated (Double-Pane) Windows: Upgrading to double-pane insulated windows is an effective longterm solution to prevent heat loss. These types of windows are designed with air pockets between panes of glass to diffuse heat transfer, resulting in a better-insulated home. Unlike singlepane units that let heat and cold pass through easily, double-pane windows provide year-round protection. • Apply Weatherstripping: A quick and lowcost way to block drafts, weatherstripping creates a tight seal around window frames to block drafts and cold air from entering and heat from escaping. • Use Thermal Insulation Film: A clear film applied to the interior frame adds an extra layer of insulation. When heated with a blow dryer, the film shrinks to form an airtight seal that locks in warmth.
5 • Seal Cracks with Caulk: Fresh caulking around window frames can help eliminate gaps where cold air can sneak in. • Hang Insulated Curtains or Cellular Shades: Insulated window treatments reduce heat loss while cellular shades also allow natural light to filter inside. Preparing windows for colder weather is a small step that can deliver lasting benefits. From reducing drafts and energy bills to creating a warmer living space, ensuring windows are properly maintained helps homeowners stay comfortable all season long. Feature How to Insulate a Flat Roof: Expert Tips to Keep Your Home Warm and Energy Efficient This Winter As summer comes to a close, more UK homeowners are preparing their properties for the colder months ahead. One area often overlooked is the roof, yet an uninsulated roof can be a major source of heat loss. In fact, up to 25% of a home’s heat escapes through the roof if it isn’t properly insulated. Google search data shows a growing awareness of the problem, with searches for ‘How to insulate a flat roof’ rising by 50% in the past 90 days. Mike Storey, roofing expert at UKFR Roofing & Insulation, explains: “Flat roof insulation is one of the smartest investments you can make ahead of autumn and winter. Not only does it improve your home’s warmth and comfort, but it can also help cut energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint. The key is choosing the right method of insulation for your property and making sure the job is done correctly.” So, what are the best ways to insulate a flat roof? Mike shares his expert advice: 1. Decide between warm roof and cold roof insulation Mike says, “Warm roof insulation is generally the most effective solution. This involves placing rigid insulation boards above the roof deck but below the waterproofing layer, keeping the entire structure warm. Cold roof insulation, meanwhile, sits between the joists inside the property, but this can be less efficient and more prone to condensation issues if not properly ventilated.” 2. Check the condition of your existing roof Mike says, “Before adding insulation, make sure your roof is in good shape. Cracks, leaks or damaged membranes should be repaired first, otherwise the insulation could trap moisture and cause more problems down the line.” 3. Choose high-quality materials “Rigid insulation boards such as PIR or mineral wool are the most common choice for flat roofs. They provide excellent thermal resistance and can be cut to size for a seamless fit,” Mike adds. It is also essential to get flat roof spec insulation boards as many standard products can cause failure of the waterproofing layer if not. Ensure the boards being used have a BBA for flat roofing and ensure thermally broken fixings are always used. 4. Think about condensation control Mike explains, “Flat roofs are more susceptible to condensation than pitched roofs. Including a vapour control layer is essential to prevent moisture build-up, which can damage the structure over time.” 5. Consider professional installation Mike says, “DIY is possible for internal cold roof insulation, but for warm roof systems or larger projects, professional installation is recommended. This ensures compliance with building regulations and long-lasting performance.” 6. Don’t wait until winter Mike says, “The best time to insulate is before the cold weather sets in. Once autumn arrives, roofing contractors are often in high demand, so acting early helps you avoid delays and ensures your home is prepared for the winter months.” As household budgets continue to feel the pressure of rising energy costs, making sure your roof is properly insulated has never been more important. Mike concludes, “Insulating your flat roof not only helps you save money on heating, it also makes your home more comfortable and sustainable. By getting the work done before winter, you’ll benefit from the results straight away, keeping the heat in and the cold firmly out.”
Feature Air Quality Excellence Through Smart Building Design Several pivotal moments throughout history have made the construction sector and citizens more concerned with air quality. Whether it be widespread illness or worsening pollution, the industry has more ways than ever to facilitate clean air. Engineer and design quality spaces with these innovations in smart building design, including eco-friendly retaining walls, biophilic design, predictive modelling and more. Advanced Filtration Systems With Predictive Maintenance Activated carbon and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are the industry’s go-to options because they capture many contaminants. You can embed them with sensor-based technologies to enable predictive maintenance. Manufacturing facilities are experimenting with this in local exhaust ventilation systems, and which produces more advantages than better air. Implementation delivered 30% energy savings in air handling. The insights let companies automate filter monitoring and better decisionmaking. Visualisations of the filters’ health prevent breakdown and more targeted maintenance and replacement timelines. Dynamic Ventilation Control With the Internet of Things (IoT) The IoT has even more versatility throughout a building. You can place air-quality sensors throughout a building, checking for various influences, including but not limited to: • Radon • Carbon dioxide • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) • Particulate matter (PM) • Ozone • Ammonia Data feeds into a centralised platform for building operators to view the air quality status in real time. Then, adjust ventilation levels, and note anomalous behaviour before the system allows too many pollutants to enter the space. You can also automate the machinery’s responses to preassigned levels of contaminants or occupancy levels. Once a metric is reached, performance will be adjusted accordingly. Worldwide, studies demonstrate that dynamic ventilation systems with sensors provide more specific awareness than traditional monitoring, including improved spatiotemporal resolution and more specific source identification. Additionally, the research showed PM2.5 was the most tested contaminant, showing global concern for this contaminant. Data suggests it could contribute to 6.7 million annual deaths, calling for construction professionals to safeguard homes with more advanced air quality strategies. Smart Material Selection and Off-Gassing Management Many building components are treated with finishes containing VOCs and other materials that off-gas. Your company must minimise or ban the use of these products and implement stronger screening policies for selection. Additionally, pre-occupancy offgassing protocols can test the space for residual influences on air quality before residents move in. Several off-gassing management techniques include deploying scrubbers. Some tower scrubbers have a contaminant-removal efficiency of over 90%, though some combinations can be as high as 99.9%. Teams may also do a building flush-out, incorporating immense amounts of fresh air to replace anything contaminated. Photoelectrochemical oxidation tools are also ideal for eliminating VOCs. Biophilic Design Integration With Automated Irrigation Several plant species have air-cleaning qualities built into their biology. This is why many construction experts are incorporating green walls and hanging plants throughout structures. They can purify the air while adding aesthetic value. However, upkeep is a barrier for many building owners and operators, so automated irrigation is crucial for keeping them healthy. Residents get the most benefits from their plants if they are at peak health for most of their lifespan, and smart irrigation systems can observe soil and water quality for any adverse influences that poor air conditions may have introduced. Eco-Friendly Retaining Wall With Integrated Air Purification The outside of a building is just as important for preserving air quality as internal fixtures. Retaining walls often contain energy- and resourceintensive materials like concrete, but an eco-friendly retaining wall incorporates renewable and organic features to enable biofiltration. They are multipurpose because they aid water management and purification alongside the air. Air passes through the wall, and the plants filter or process pollution, preventing it from entering the building or being released back into the environment. These are ideal near highways or in urban spaces where high amounts of ground-level pollution can seep into building foundations and unsealed cracks. Air Quality Modelling and Control Construction teams can use assets like digital twins and computational fluid dynamics to create virtual models of building ventilation and air systems before breaking ground. The programs can then simulate the equipment’s efficacy while considering the structure’s other elements, like materials and floor plan. Modelling could have artificial intelligence (AI) integrations to observe local weather patterns and blueprints of similar constructions. It can weigh historical data with incoming information to determine the future of its air quality. Teams need to use these tools to prevent unnecessary retrofits and renovations later in the building’s life cycle. How Eco-Friendly Retaining Walls, Ventilation and AI Relate You may install new filters or sensors and get a few indoor plants. Both enhance a building’s chances of maintaining crisp, breathable air with minimal pollution. A structure’s ability to maintain internal conditions is rooted in its design choices, which construction professionals can engineer into any building as early as the brainstorming phase. Teams must do this to preserve public and environmental health, especially in new construction.

The team is encouraged to view each home or building as if it were their own, a strategic approach to ensure consistency in service excellence. “Our process always starts with listening,” Barrett added. “We want to understand what is going wrong, what is missing, and what the client’s expectations are. From there, we run proper load calculations, analyse building specs, and recommend the most efficient systems based on the actual needs of the space.” While the company has undertaken countless projects, Barrett cited one of the more challenging, yet memorable ones to be a sameday air conditioning installation completed for a family in North Winnipeg – during the peak of a July heatwave. The home has an older layout, with tight attic access, outdated ductwork, and limited space around the electrical panel. While most contractors would have split this into a two-to-three-day job, Abundant Air recognised that the family had small children and would need the cooling restored that very day. “It wasn’t easy,” Barrett recalled, “but the teamwork, experience, and trust in our process made it happen. The family was beyond grateful, and that kind of immediate impact is what makes our work so rewarding. These moments mean everything to us – they show us that what we are doing is making a difference in people’s daily lives.” For its significant impact on the lives of its clients, Abundant Air has established a remarkable reputation within the community of Winnipeg. As a result, the company has built a solid online presence, boasting an outstanding rating on Google comprising more than 300 five-star reviews. One client wrote: “Highly recommended! Huge shout out to the fantastic team at Abundant Air; this week, they replaced our furnace, air conditioning, and hot water tank, and we are already reaping the benefits. The improvement in air circulation and temperature was noticeable immediately, and we know there will be savings going forward. The process from start to finish – from sales, through installation, and clean-up – was professional, informative, and efficient. Abundant Air was a pleasure to deal with, and we couldn’t be happier with the service!” While another reported: “Thanks so much to the staff at Abundant Air for going above and beyond to get our system planned out and operational. We had a few different companies come to take a look and walk away, so a big thanks for going the extra mile to work with us and help us get our business off the ground. Appreciated beyond words!” And a final client said: “We recently had a new AC installed by Abundant Air and are very happy with the final results. Everyone at the company is incredibly professional and take the time to explain everything you require in great detail which, for us, made the decision to use them even more obvious. We were so impressed that we also signed up for their Peace of Mind maintenance plan and look forward to continuing our association with this company going forward. Do yourself a favour and avoid the big-name nightmare companies just looking to make a quick sale. Call the professionals at Abundant Air for all your HVAC needs!” The HVAC space in Winnipeg is highly competitive, but Abundant Air shines for its consistency, care, and trust. Clients of Abundant Air know that the company will show up as promised, answer the phone when called, and solve their complex problems without upselling or pushing unnecessary services. BUILD Q4 2025 Building design and construction bring challenges in every environment. In Palestine, those challenges are magnified. Urban areas are densely populated, leaving little space for new development. Hilly terrain, water scarcity, and fragmented land ownership add to the complexity of planning. Add to that restricted access to materials, economic instability, and the uncertainty and risk brought about by regional political complexities, and planning a new project can seem a monumental task. One company that has consistently managed to overcome these hurdles, with stunning results, is ArteVision Engineering and Planning. The company offers highly specialised expertise in engineering and design to industry and private investors. Success in such conditions demands more than technical knowledge; it requires resilience, resourcefulness, determination, and practical problem-solving. Employing a team of hand-picked engineering consultants, ArteVision offers a wide range of disciplines and services. These include architecture, interior design, renovation and restoration, urban planning, landscaping, structural design, infrastructure design, green and sustainable design, design reviews, and project management. With this breadth of skills, the company delivers complex projects while adapting to the limits of local resources and infrastructure. Sustainable Architecture Firm of the Year 2025 – Palestine & Best Modern-Style Villa Architecture Project 2025 (Palestine): Twins Villas – Ramallah Palestinian firm ArteVision Engineering and Planning has earned a strong reputation as a pioneer in its field. The company is headquartered in Ramallah City and operates a second office in Gaza. Established in 2012, ArteVision has grown into a trusted name in engineering and design. We speak with co-founder and consultant engineer Dina Qazzaz Eweidat to find out more. Dina is the main architect and designer heading up ArteVision, she also lectures in construction at Birzeit University. Dina is committed to delivering sustainable projects for the benefit of all. We ask her what sets ArteVision apart from its competitors. She tells us, without hesitation: “Our ability to thrive in areas where many would find obstacles. Palestine’s challenging environment has shaped our approach to engineering and planning. We don't just solve problems, we create opportunities. We’ve consistently delivered specialised projects that not only meet the technical requirements but also address local needs, sustainability, and long-term impact.” ArteVision’s experience working in this challenging environment has honed the team’s resourcefulness and adaptability far beyond traditional expectations. Learning to source materials and labour locally has so far been key to reducing costs without sacrificing quality. ArteVision’s collaborative approach sees the company working closely with stakeholders and local communities to ensure projects are tailored to the specific needs and context of the area. The company overcomes barriers presented to it time after time. This has earned ArteVision a reputation for delivering exceptional projects under ArteVision for Engineering and Planning
