Q3 2026 The Future of Construction: Sustainable, Affordable, Authentic The built environment is rapidly transitioning towards sustainability, with contractors and homeowners alike preparing to make the shift. At the same time, the industry is still suffering from a common misconception that environmentally responsible materials are either too expensive or only suitable for niche projects. Lowie Bricks is one company on a mission to challenge that mindset, leading the brick revolution with a solution that is practical, scalable, and commercially viable for mainstream construction. Managing Director Andy Wilson told us more below, as Lowie Bricks is named in the Design & Build Awards 2026. “Sustainable construction should become the norm, not the exception.” In 2019, one determined company launched a research and development project to find sustainable and affordable alternatives to classic facing bricks. After extensive experimentation with new, patented techniques and cutting-edge materials, this research programme culminated in the development of the industry-leading Lowie Bricks. Neither clay nor concrete, Lowie Bricks are hybrid-facing bricks possessing the key technical properties of both materials. These bricks manage to preserve the aesthetic and qualitative characteristics of clay fired bricks without preserving their carbon emissions; through natural carbonation, Lowie Bricks absorb and store atmospheric CO₂, resulting in up to an 81.3% reduction in carbon emissions when compared to clay bricks. In a market saturated with low carbon products, Lowie Bricks stands out for refusing to ask the industry to compromise. Many low carbon materials do not offer cost, appearance, and practicality in equal measures but, for the Lowie Bricks team, the aim has always been to create a product that is simultaneously sustainable, authentic, and commercially viable at a wide scale. “We’re incredibly conscious about the huge impact the built environment has on the climate, and with the UK’s love of brick, we wanted to develop a product that could replicate the qualities of traditional brick but with a fraction of the carbon cost,” Andy told us. “We are also able to keep costs competitive with standard fired masonry bricks, meaning that our bricks are for all projects, not just houses with unlimited budgets.” This work has been driven by a core belief that sustainable construction products must be commercially viable if they are expected to create genuine industry-wide change. With growing social awareness surrounding sustainability and climate responsibility, Lowie Bricks has made significant waves across the sector with a solution that is scalable, affordable, and easy to adopt within existing construction practices. Lowie Bricks recognises that to ensure meaningful change truly occurs, its solutions must respect both heritage and environmental performance. The traditional brick is strongly connected to British architecture and identity, and the Lowie Bricks team understands that bridging the gap between traditional architecture and the industry’s future needs will ensure that its products not only stand the test of time but also play an instrumental role in facilitating the built environment’s shift to sustainability. “Preserving the authenticity of brick has always been incredibly important to us,” said Andy. “We never wanted to create a product that felt like a compromise or looked out of place within the built environment. Whilst we started off in Belgium and started with white and grey bricks, we’re currently looking at expanding our range of colours to create some classic reds and yellows as well, to give developers and designers greater choice.” The Lowie Bricks team is now preparing for the future, with a varied pipeline that testifies to the value of its products. As awareness around embodied carbon continues to grow, the company is seeing increasing interest from architects and developers who are seeking practical ways to reduce the environmental impact of their projects without compromising appearance or cost. Looking ahead, Lowie Bricks will see a number of interesting projects, from residential high-rise schemes and one-off homes through to social housing. Ultimately, the team aims to establish Lowie Bricks as a recognised leader over the next five years. The company aims to lead not just in low carbon masonry, but as a genuine competitor to standard fired masonry across the UK’s construction sector. This aspiration will see Lowie Bricks scaling production, expanding its product range, and working with more architects, developers, and contractors who are serious about reducing embodied carbon. As Lowie Bricks is named the Leaders in Sustainable Building Materials Research 2026, Andy concluded, “We are not reinventing the wheel; we’re just changing what it’s made of. At Lowie, put simply, we want to lead a brick revolution. We hope to play a role in changing perceptions across the industry and proving that sustainability does not need to come at the expense of affordability, quality, or good design.” Contact: Andy Wilson Company: Lowie Bricks UK Web Address: www.lowiebricksuk.com AIM-May26043
