Q3 2023

12 BUILD Q3 2023 Apr23050 Montreaux creates benchmark developments and tailor-made homes across London and the Southeast. As recently announced winners of Best Landmark Residential Developer 2023 – London, in the BUILD Design & Build Awards, we thought it was a good time to catch up and find out a little more about what it does. ontreaux is a company that acquires land, often brownfield sites, to innovate and adapt it for the better using its entrepreneurial spirit to drive positive change. As a community-minded company, it greatly values bringing moments of joy to fruition within everything it does. It fully considers the environmental impact of its creativity, and aims to ‘always bring better’. As a dynamic young company, who first began creating award-winning developments in 2014, it focuses on looking for better ways to work together to achieve outstanding results. Montreaux lives and breathes its values, offering expertise and commitment to projects, working with precision, and taking ownership of what it does and how it does it. The company values have evolved over the years, which Montreaux puts down to its growing levels of experience, and also a certain degree of introspection brought on by the impact of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. During this challenging time, the team evaluated how everyone worked together, what moments made them most proud, and what made Montreaux stand out from the crowd. They then honed their values to take such aspects into account, and ensure the company culture and commitments delivered on what they felt were the most important facets with a promise to build better for the sake of the future. Montreaux adopted a mantra to ‘Build Back Better™’, which it now proudly declares as its defining USP. The way the company goes about achieving its intentions is to look for opportunities where it can add more value to the locations it buys and builds. As a smaller building company, it recognises it has been gifted the ability to be more boutique in its approach. This translates as consciously looking for sites it believes are good to build on, evaluating the architectural vernacular, assessing the impact of transport connections, being considerate to nature, and endeavouring to design something that is both needed and wanted. Ultimately, it aims to improve the lives of the people who are going to live in its dwellings. Several of Montreaux’ recent developments have exemplified its fine approach. One involved a four-year endeavour to get planning permission for a new community in Southall, designed to provide the full breadth of housing and services required for the community as a whole. This included workspaces, parks, connectivity to transport, retail, cycleways, different levels of housing, and more. Another example is the Urban Picturehouse in Sidcup. This living space is built on the site of a former art deco cinema. Montreaux changed its exterior materials and designed the interior specifications specifically to pay homage to the faded glamour M of the art deco period. This resulted in a building of considerable architectural interest, and of which the local community can be truly proud. An additional site worth mentioning is in Binfield, Berkshire, where Montreaux has used the architectural vernacular of local cottages to create an intimate development of 6 affordable flats and 15 family houses that fit into the landscape and oldgrowth oaks, just as if it has always been there. Whether working on property development in London or the Home Counties, Montreaux operates under the guidance of three sustainability pillars. These are carbon-zero strategy, social awareness, and good governance. Directed by these pillars, it aspires to build homes that will perform well for people both today and in the future. The social and cultural impact of its work colours its decision-making processes, with Montreaux taking the time to evaluate every detail, assess the architectural style and features, and consider how to best use land to create both shared and private spaces. As an in-house multidisciplinary team, it brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to every single project it tackles. This enables it to develop designs that are cohesive, exceptional, developable, and profitable. This both supports its sustainability growth, and sets it apart as a visionary builder of extraordinary homes. We say well done to this outstanding, award-winning company, and its enviable legacy of building places and communities where people want to live.
