Home Builder Awards 2021

Home Builder Awards 2021 BUILD 37 Jan21175 n 2010, Mark Wiffen founded Marlin Design. He started the business after years working his way through the profession, working at an Architectural practice in various offices around London and through Essex where he qualified as an Architectural Technician. This on-the-job experience has given him a unique insight into how the construction industry works, one which he can leverage for the benefit of his clients. Those who are looking to extend or renovate a property have a very different set of problems to those who are constructing something new. This means that many builders who undertake work in this field are not best qualified to tender for the work. By hiring an Architect or Designer like Marlin Design, they can pitch based on designed fact. This ensures that clients receive clear and concise quotations as opposed to what might have been. The key to Marlin Design’s success has been their approach to each project from a local perspective, and involving the necessary agencies from the beginning. In such a specialised industry, it pays to be able to hold the client’s hand throughout the process so that they can be confident in its ultimate success. Afterall, the work that Marlin Design does is intrinsic to the success of the project moving forward to the construction stage, and onto the finished product. One of the latest projects that the team has been involved in has also been one of its most challenging. Marlin Design was approached by a local developer to refurbish and extend what was considered to be the ugliest building in the town. There were numerous challenges, including the property’s part in the local Conservation area and the aesthetic difficulties involved in being very close to some of the oldest business premises in the world. Any design had to enhance and blend effortlessly into what already existed. Not only were there heritage matters to consider, but Marlin Design had to transform the parking situation. The site had become renowned for its three integral garages fronting the public highway, which reduced the available street parking spaces by three as access was required at all times. The finished property demonstrates the skill and elegance of a Marlin Design solution, with what was a first floor a one- bedroom flat, with a derelict ground floor, into a smart three bedroom double bay fronted Georgian home, with high quality finishes throughout. The success of the project comes from the way in which this home has now been brought into line with the other properties in the street. It’s the perfect example of a project like this blending into a now complete street scene. When it comes to renovations and extensions, it’s worth talking to the experts. Talking to Marlin Design guarantees you a perspective that is practical and sympathetic in equal measure. With such an incredible track record of success, we look forward to seeing what wonderful projects they are involved in next. Architects and Designers need to take into account not only what their client’s want, but what has gone before and what is around the property. Their drawings need to create something that blends in seamlessly with what exists.
