As the project developed, several restrictions emerged that were not fully understood at the outset. The land use zoning required amendment, the building code pathway required careful interpretation, and the team was challenged with exploring an alternative building classification strategy in order to maintain the project’s key objectives. A further challenge in this project was finding a way to expedite occupancy for a portion of the addition containing offices, while the remainder of construction continued. JAG Form implemented a modular construction strategy that allowed this area to function as a standalone building until the rest of the addition was completed. This required the careful coordination of code requirements, construction sequencing, temporary functionality, and how the modular component would ultimately interface with the permanent addition. “This project also allowed us to pursue a more meaningful design response,” Jon reflected. “We studied the client’s work, processes, and internal culture, then looked for ways to translate those associations into physical architectural elements. One example was a sculptural rain scupper and downspout, developed as both a performative drainage solution and an architectural feature. Using 3DS Max particle elements, we studied how water would flow from the roof, down the sculptural downspout, and into the existing surface swale.” He added, “We are proud of how the project turned technical constraints into design opportunities while retaining a strong sense of identity and meaning.” For JAG Form, the future is focused on careful growth.
