A project that BDK Architects is particularly proud of is the Jersey Archive project, which is the largest passively air-conditioned modern archive building in the world. Opened in July 2000 on the site of a former quarry, this facility has created a new civic destination for the local population, as well as tourists retracing their roots to the Channel Islands. “The regeneration of the quarry, previously lost to the public, parallels the raison d’être of the Archive itself – to reveal and preserve the island’s history,” Paul told us. “The building is uncompromisingly modern but with a sensitive use of materials, demonstrating how modern architecture can fit into and complement Jersey’s traditional setting.” Together with Ove Arup and Partners, the team developed an environmental strategy exploiting the significant thermal mass of the building’s structure to provide passive environmental control of humidity and temperature. This obviated the need for powered air-conditioning with its high capital, running, and maintenance costs. The team also undertook interior design for the project, encompassing the detailing and procurement of bespoke furniture and the management of public art interventions. Since opening to the public, the Jersey Archive has received universal acclaim for its customer-friendly facilities and efficient working environment. The project has been highly praised by acclaimed architectural critics, and reviews have been published in the Architects Journal, the Architectural Review, and Architectural Research Quarterly. In 2016, nearly 20 years after the original project was completed, BDK Architects was appointed to undertake an extension, primarily for doubling archival storage in the strongrooms and adding a new computer server strongroom. After dedicated feasibility studies and consultation with Planning, the Jersey Architecture Commission, and the local community, BDK Architects proudly delivered a fully functional, state-of-the-art facility in March 2020, successfully securing the past for future generations.
