This was the case with Pegasus School, for which the practice has received our award for Best SEND Education Design Project 2026 (Midlands). A unique and inclusive Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school in Caldwell, Derbyshire, Pegasus School is set within a beautiful Georgian building, boasts acres of rural land, and even has its own school farm. Pupils here have often disengaged with the school system and have high sensory needs, complex behaviours, lower cognitive skills, and reduced communication skills, meaning they need something more from their learning environment. JTDS Architecture’s role has been to develop proposals for new and improved facilities for this site, from additional classrooms and an agricultural learning building to an extension of the car park. Such an undertaking has not been easy, due to Pegasus School occupying a Grade II* listed building. This means any development has to be carefully considered when it comes to appearance, scale, heritage impact, landscape setting, and long-term use. For Jose and his team, it was also crucial that the design reflected how Pegasus School actually operates day to day. Following the completion of this project, the rest of 2026 looks positive for this architecture and design consultancy, which is continuing to work on a number of residential, education, care, housing, and community projects.
