Build Infrastructure Awards 2017

2017 Infrastructure Awards Build 23 stablished in 2011, Debbie Flevotomou Architects is an award- winning practice drawing on the expertise and experience of Founder Debbie. The firm’s latest project is the redesign of Tower 42. When Tower 42 was built was the first tower in London. The reaction - both positive and negative - was massive. It was built by Natwest bank and the floorplan has been designed by the natwest logo. Unfortunately, the need for larger floorplates became apparent soon after it was built while the construction methods for towers got meanwhile advanced , therefore the bank never moved the whole team in the tower. Since then, the tower has an impressive history. It was bombed and re-built, led lights were placed on the roof, the restaurant is considered to have some of the best views in London etc. It was also refused listed status, the front entrance was redesigned but never built and is considered non-functional, dated and bland by many. The redesign of Tower 42 in London, a concept that has not been realised yet, has won five international awards and was featured in several magazines. The functionality of the new design is the expansion of the floor plates – the biggest design problem now - through the introduction of a clever facade without the need to change the existing structure. At the moment, the concrete core is surrounding by 3 existing cantilevered leaves. Each leaf (A,B,C) is to work as a branch of the Core. The new branches will create a spiral 3 dimensional movement inter connected to the core both vertically and horizontally; this will allows for constant movement changes giving maximum structural strength. The new facade is designed to carry the load to the ground allowing for the larger floor plates to be increased by 30% making the tower more commercially viable. The internal areas are still open plan, even if the new construction is blended with the old. Six new communal garden are implemented to the design, assisting with the natural ventilation of the building and the occupants’ amenity and well-being. The concept is to create a sculpture through the unequal movements of the floor plates and the facade; is an improvising scheme. As with every piece of art, tries to see a moment in time.
